Dr. Carolyn Newton

Carolyn graduated from Ohio State University in 1962. Until that time she had spent most of her life on a farm or in rural areas. Her adventurous nature caused her to seek the unusual and she had planned to enter the peace corps of the CIA. However, by the time she graduated she had the unexpected chance to join the United Airlines as a flight attendant. Five years later she took a leave of absence and joined the Army as a First Lieutenant. She got her first look at a country she came to love, Korea. Following her years in the Army, she returned to the United States but continued in the Reserves. Soon she became restless again and, having been inspired by the General Hospital she was assigned to, she began to study nursing. However, she did not feel challenged here and soon found herself in pre-med. In three years she was ready for medical school. She was accepted by East Tennessee State in Johnson City. This school was on of several Teague-Cranston schools, founded to upgrade medical care of VA campuses. After graduation she completed a residency in Family Medicine in Chicago. She returned to the military, this time to the Air Force. The next two years were served in Korea, the second one was as a flight surgeon. She was awarded the Air Medal. She returned to the U.S. with two Amerasian sisters for whom she was the legal guardian. She continued in the Air Force reserves after her discharge. A year later she was the clinic commander of the Air Guard unit in Madison and later the State Air Surgeon. Four days after 9/11 she was on her way to Kuwait. She now lives in Bristol and works part time at Wisconsin Neuropathy, as well as part time at the Milwaukee VA Hospital.
